Job Description: Tool Maker Level Machinist

Merit Industries

2008 W. 16th St., Erie, PA 16505

**Position Overview**

Merit Industries, an AS9100-certified precision machining company specializing in close-tolerance components and assemblies for aerospace and defense applications, is seeking a highly skilled **Tool Maker Level Machinist** (senior/experienced level). This role involves fabricating, repairing, and maintaining precision tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and dies to support high-accuracy manufacturing processes. The ideal candidate excels in manual and CNC machining, holds tight tolerances (e.g., ±0.0002" to ±0.0005"), and ensures compliance with aerospace quality standards. This position requires strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently or collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

**Key Responsibilities**

- Read and interpret complex engineering blueprints, sketches, CAD/CAM files, and specifications to plan and execute precision machining operations.

- Set up, operate, and maintain a variety of machine tools, including CNC mills, CNC lathes, manual lathes (e.g., Hardinge), milling machines (e.g., Bridgeport), surface grinders, and precision grinding equipment (e.g., Chevalier).

- Fabricate, repair, and modify custom tools, jigs, fixtures, dies, molds, gauges, and production aids to exacting tolerances for aerospace components.

- Perform high-precision grinding, turning, milling, drilling, shaping, and finishing operations while holding tolerances as tight as ±0.0002".

- Conduct preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on existing tooling to minimize downtime and ensure repeatability and functionality.

- Verify dimensions using precision measuring instruments (micrometers, calipers, CMM, indicators, etc.) and document conformance to specifications.

- Collaborate with engineering, quality assurance, and production teams to troubleshoot tooling issues, support new product introductions, and implement design changes or modifications.

- Ensure all work complies with AS9100 quality management system requirements, including proper documentation, traceability, and counterfeit parts prevention.

- Identify potential risks in tooling processes and contribute to risk mitigation and continual improvement initiatives.

- Participate in root cause analysis for nonconformities and support corrective actions.

- Maintain a clean, organized workspace adhering to 5S principles and safety protocols.

**Required Qualifications**

- High school diploma or GED; technical/vocational training or apprenticeship in tool and die making, precision machining, or related field strongly preferred.

- Minimum 8–10+ years of hands-on experience as a tool maker/machinist, with proven expertise in aerospace or high-precision manufacturing environments.

- Advanced proficiency in manual machining (lathes, mills, grinders) and CNC setup/operation (programming a plus).

- Demonstrated ability to hold extremely tight tolerances (e.g., ±0.0002"–±0.0005") and work with exotic/hardened materials common in aerospace.

- In-depth knowledge of precision grinding techniques and tool geometry.

- Strong blueprint reading skills, including GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).

- Experience with precision measurement tools and inspection methods.

- Familiarity with AS9100 quality standards and aerospace requirements (e.g., product safety, configuration management).

- Ability to work from verbal instructions, sketches, or incomplete information when needed.

**Preferred Qualifications**

- Completion of a formal tool and die apprenticeship or journeyman certification.

- Experience with CAD/CAM software for tooling design or modifications.

- Knowledge of fixture design, jig/fixture building, and die repair.

- Prior work in aerospace/defense machining (e.g., close-tolerance components for aircraft).

- Forklift certification or experience with lifting equipment.

**Skills and Attributes**

- Exceptional mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.

- High attention to detail and commitment to quality.

- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while meeting deadlines.

- Strong communication skills for team collaboration.

- Physically capable of standing for extended periods, lifting up to 50 lbs, and performing repetitive tasks safely.

- Positive attitude, adaptability, and dedication to safety and continuous improvement.

**What We Offer**

- Competitive salary commensurate with experience.

- Comprehensive benefits package (health, dental, vision, 401(k), etc.).

- Opportunities for professional development and advancement in a stable, growing aerospace company.

- Supportive team environment focused on precision and excellence.

**How to Apply**

Interested candidates should submit a resume and cover letter highlighting relevant tool making/machining experience and tolerance achievements to [email protected] (or via your preferred application method).
