Position Summary:
The Permit Authorized Individual (PAI) is responsible for ensuring the safe and compliant execution of hot work operations within assigned areas. This role requires a proactive and assertive approach to safety, including verifying worksite readiness, maintaining hot work permits, and conducting continuous surveillance of active operations.
The PAI is expected to actively identify hazards, enforce safety requirements, and take immediate action to correct unsafe conditions. In addition to hot work oversight, this role supports broader safety initiatives and monitoring activities throughout the worksite.
Key Responsibilities:
- Review, issue, and maintain all hot work permits/tickets in accordance with company and customer requirements
- Verify spaces are properly prepared for hot work, including hazard removal, cleanliness, and required protections
- Conduct pre-work inspections and authorize work only when all safety requirements are met
- Perform continuous surveillance of active hot work operations to ensure ongoing compliance
- Address and correct unsafe conditions in real time; escalate issues as required
- Ensure fire protection equipment accountability and readiness, including distributing fire bottles prior to production, weighing CO₂ bottles within the work area to verify proper charge, and collecting/returning equipment following completion of work. Confirm all equipment is present, serviceable, and available for immediate use
- Conduct safety monitoring outside of hot work activities as directed
- Support customer safety walks and inspections as required
- Coordinate with Safety, Fire Watch, and Production teams to enforce compliance
- Maintain accurate and complete documentation of permits, inspections, and observations
- Exercise stop work authority when unsafe conditions are identified
Qualifications:
- Experience in ship repair or industrial environments required; background in safety strongly preferred
- Strong knowledge of hot work procedures, permits, and safety requirements
- Must be confident and willing to address unsafe behaviors and enforce compliance
- Ability to identify hazards and take immediate corrective action
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Effective communication skills and ability to work across multiple teams
- Must be able to obtain and maintain access to all area shipyards and naval bases (DBIDS clearance required)
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to climb ladders, scaffolds, and stairs frequently
- Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs regularly, and more with assistance
- Able to work in confined spaces, at heights, and in active industrial environments
- Must be able to stand, walk, crouch, kneel, and bend for extended periods
- Comfortable working around active hot work operations and environmental hazards
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods
Work Schedule & Hours:
- Full-time position averaging 48–56 hours per week, including some weekends
- Extended hours may be required based on production needs
- Flexibility, reliability, and strong attendance are essential
