Machining Plant Supervisor
Overview
Ranor, Inc. is a large-scale fabrication and machining supplier. Our current focus is on defense-related products in support of Navy submarine components.
At Ranor, Inc., our machining plant operates large horizontal and vertical CNC machining centers for large component machining. The Machining Plant Supervisor is responsible for leading day-to-day machining operations, ensuring production work is completed safely, accurately, efficiently, and in accordance with all quality, documentation, and customer requirements.
This position provides direct supervision to CNC machinists and machine operators on dayshift. The supervisor is responsible for assigning work, supporting setups and production flow, monitoring performance, reinforcing quality and safety expectations, and ensuring employees follow approved work instructions, drawings, inspection requirements, and company procedures.
We are seeking an experienced machining leader only. This is not an entry-level supervisory position.
Duties Include
- Supervise dayshift machining operations, including employees operating horizontal and vertical boring mills and other large CNC machining centers.
- Assign daily work based on production priorities, staffing, machine availability, and delivery requirements.
- Monitor job progress throughout the shift and remove obstacles that impact safety, quality, schedule, or productivity.
- Provide technical support to machinists during setups, first-piece checks, in-process inspection, and troubleshooting.
- Ensure employees are properly reading and interpreting complex blueprints, NC programs, setup documentation, and work instructions.
- Verify that in-process inspection requirements are being followed using appropriate machine shop inspection equipment.
- Reinforce strict adherence to Ranor’s written work instructions, quality procedures, safety rules, and documentation requirements.
- Coordinate with Production Control, Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, and Management to support schedule execution and resolve shop-floor issues.
- Ensure machinists are working to required tolerances and escalating quality or technical concerns when needed.
- Coach, mentor, and develop machinists to improve technical capability, productivity, safety, and accountability.
- Monitor attendance, work performance, housekeeping, and employee conduct within the assigned area.
- Support continuous improvement efforts related to machining efficiency, setup reduction, rework prevention, and overall shop performance.
- Communicate shift priorities, production status, quality concerns, and staffing needs to management.

Qualifications Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- 5+ years of CNC machining experience in a precision manufacturing environment.
- Prior lead, supervisor, or management experience in a machining environment strongly preferred.
- Experience with large-part machining, horizontal boring mills, vertical boring mills, or similar CNC machining centers strongly preferred.
- Strong blueprint reading and GD&T understanding.
- Proven ability to support complex machining setups and troubleshoot production issues.
- Experience with precision inspection tools, including micrometers, bore gages, indicators, and related machine shop inspection equipment.
- Strong understanding of in-process inspection, documentation discipline, and quality requirements.
- Ability to lead employees working to tight tolerances, including the .0005” range.
- Ability to follow and enforce written work instructions, procedures, and safety requirements.
- Strong communication, leadership, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to hold employees accountable while supporting training, development, and production goals.
- U.S. Citizenship required.
