Job Description

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for defining and supporting the technical aspects of operations at the Naval Foundry and Propeller Center (NFPC). NFPC is a low volume, large size, sand-cast foundry that primarily pours non-ferrous alloys from induction furnaces. NFPC completes all machining operations in house and ships completed products to our internal Navy customers.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Prepare designs, engineering plans, and specifications for new and overhaul crane contracts. Areas of design include mechanical systems, drive trains, gearing, material properties, braking systems, couplings, etc.
  • Prepares correspondence (official letters, memos, emails, etc.) technical specifications, reports, and engineering procedures.
  • Define projects, develop scopes of work, cost estimates, and schedules for various mechanical design projects for the purpose of securing project approval and funding.
  • Reviews mechanical crane designs from crane manufacturers for conformance with contract specifications and intended function, identify discrepancies in drawings, calculations, and data from designers/manufacturers.
  • Acts as a liaison with outside interests including NAVSEA, NAVFAC, NNSY, NCC, engineering firms, and crane manufacturers on specific projects.
  • Shall assist in developing and implementing engineering process controls/techniques for continuous improvement of lifting and assembly operations.
  • Evaluate in-service problems and develops short and long term solutions to keep cranes safe and reliable.
  • Shall perform other tasks as required.

Qualifications Required for the Position

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. Area of expertise should reside in Manufacturing, Mechanical or equivalent.
